Studenica Monastery (UNESCO 1986) is Serbia's most important medieval monastery, founded in 1190 by Stefan Nemanja — founder of the Serbian state and the Nemanjić dynasty. Sanctuary of the Serbian people, spiritual centre of the country.

⛪ History

Stefan Nemanja founded the monastery as his endowment in 1190, where he retired under the name monk Simeon in the last years of his life. His son Sava (Saint Sava, founder of the Serbian church) gathered his relics. The monastery was the seat of the Serbian archbishopric from 1217 to 1219.

🎨 Church of the Virgin (1196)

The monastery's main church — decorated with white marble, Romanesque-Byzantine style. Inside famous 13th-c. frescoes: „Crucifixion of Christ" (1209, one of the best medieval works), „King Uroš I" (1228). Large 16th-c. iconostasis.
