Kalemegdan (Belgrade Fortress) is Belgrade's most important historical monument — a 2000-year-old fortress at the confluence of the Sava and Danube. The name comes from Turkish „kale" (fortress) and „meydan" (battlefield). Here Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, Serbs, Turks, Austro-Hungarians met — Belgrade was conquered and destroyed over 60 times in its history.

🏛️ History

On the site of the current fortress there was a Celtic settlement Singidunum (3rd c. BC), then a Roman military camp (1st c. AD), Byzantine fortification, medieval Serbian fortress of Despot Stefan Lazarević (14th–15th c.), and finally an Ottoman fortress (1521–1867) with significant Austro-Hungarian renovations. The Turks handed it over to Prince Mihailo Obrenović in 1867.

🎯 What to see

  • Upper Town — main part of the fortress with gates, bastions, view of the confluence.
  • Lower Town — shore, promenade, Roman well, Church of St Petka.
  • Victor (1928, sculptor Ivan Meštrović) — symbol monument of Belgrade, on the highest point of the fortress.
  • Military Museum — in the fortress, artillery, armoured vehicles, weapons from Roman to modern times. 300 dinars.
  • Clock Tower (18th c.) — Ottoman tower with clock.
  • Charles VI Gate (1736) — Baroque Austro-Hungarian gate.
  • Nebojša Tower — medieval tower on the Danube.
  • Park — spacious park around the fortress, favourite spot of Belgraders.

🌅 The view

From Kalemegdan you can see the confluence of the Sava into the Danube — a unique sight. On the other side of the Sava — New Belgrade (modern part), on the other side of the Danube — Zemun (once a separate city). Sunset from the Victor — the most popular image of Belgrade.
